Yellow Dal Fry 

Main Ingredients: Arhar dal/Pigeon pea lentils

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup arhar dal/pigeon pea lentils
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 medium size onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium size tomato, chopped
  • 1-2 chillies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 2-3 tablespoon oil or ghee or unsalted butter
  • Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Pressure cook a cup of the arhar dal with all the spice turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and coriander powder in 2.5 cups water.
  2. In another pan heat ghee or unsalted butter.
  3. add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. add the onions and fry till they become transparent or light brown.
  5. Now add the garlic and fry for some seconds till their raw aroma disappears.
  6. Add the asafoetida powder. Green chillies, and stir.
  7. Add the tomatoes and cook till they soften, for about 2-3 minute.
  8. Add the cooked dal mixture and ¼ cup of water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  9. garnish the dal fry with coriander leaves.
  10. Serve immediately.

Note:

  1. While serving top the dal fry with ghee or butter.
  2. Dal fry is not thin and is usually has a medium to thick consistency.
  3. You can adjust the amount of water you want.
